Labour members had the choice of electing as their leader a socialist in Neil Finlay, a middle of the road liberal with Sarah Boyack, or an out and out Tory in Jim Murphy, says Falkirk Council’s SNP Group Leader, Cllr Cecil Meiklejohn.
The fact New Labour members overwhelmingly voted for Blairite Murphy, demonstrates just how much they are out of touch with the people who traditionally voted Labour but who are now flooding into the SNP says the Nationalist Councillor.
She went on to say,
“The full range of candidates were presented to Labour members and they chose one that is not only tarred with the Blair brush but has an appalling record of abusing the expenses regime in Westminster, even by that institution’s very low standards.”
“Labour members cannot claim to be anything other than a Conservative Party mark 2 with the election of Jim Murphy. The alliance of Labour and Tory parties within both Better Together and the local coalition between them within Falkirk Council has shown that with similar policies and objectives what we have now is not so much an alliance but a merger.”
“Jim Murphy has performed political cartwheels during his election campaign, changing position on key policy issues on an almost daily basis proving that no one can believe anything he has to say.”
“The SNP are now the only party campaigning for radical change to make our country a fairer and more equal place. We believed that the Labour higherachy were totally out of touch with the electorate but Jim Murphy was elected by the Labour grass roots.”
“For those who want a fairer society, there is only one vote that will count next May and that is for the SNP.”
