Falkirk Council SNP Group Leader, Cllr Cecil Meiklejohn, has put out a call to Labour Party members, including Falkirk Council colleagues, to “back the case for independence” in light of the last few weeks events.
A bad result for Labour in the European Community Referendum has not only led to the real prospect of another independence referendum in Scotland but also the collapse of the Labour UK leadership in Westminster.
During the last Scottish independence referendum Labour joined with the Tories to form Better Together, an organisation that appeared to be Tory funded but Labour led. That decision to campaign hand in hand with he Conservative Party is believed to have cost Labour dearly at the 2015 and 2016 elections.
Mrs Meiklejohn said,
“I sincerely hope that the Labour Party in Scotland in general and Falkirk in particular will recognise that they made the wrong decision in 2014 that has cost them all but 1 of their Westminster and left them in third place within the Scottish Parliament”
“Now is looks as though there will be another independence referendum on the back of the vote on the membership of the European Community where Scotland appears to being dragged out of Europe against the will of the people.”
“Last round Labour lost all credibility with many of their traditional voters who campaigned for a YES vote leading to the collapse of their support. In addition it is clear that the splits within he Labour leadership will result in further period of internal warfare.”
“What is clear is that with both the Tory and Labour Parliamentary Leaders engaging in internal leaderships the outcome is likely to be a sharp move to the political right within both parties”
“Its time Labour in Scotland put the interests of the people of this country before their Westminster leaders, particularly as it is clear they have little interest in Scotland.”
